Gynaecology FAQs for Patients

Do I Need a Referral?

If you want to claim the Medicare rebate for your appointment with Dr. Smirnova, you will need a referral letter from your GP. However, you can still make an appointment without a referral letter, though you will need to pay the full fee out of pocket.

How Long is My Referral Valid?

GP Referral: A referral letter from your GP is valid for 12 months from the day of your first appointment.

Specialist Referral: Referrals from other specialists are valid for 3 months.

If your referral has expired, please request a new referral letter. A current referral ensures that a health professional has recently assessed your health concerns.

What are the Costs and Fees I Can Expect?

Dr. Smirnova charges a fixed consultation fee. Additional charges apply for in-room procedures such as colposcopy biopsy. Fees vary, so please call our consulting rooms at (02) 9557 2450 to discuss our current fee structure.

For treatments or surgeries, there may be additional ‘out-of-pocket’ costs. It’s essential to discuss your level of cover with your private health insurer before any surgical procedure.

What Should I Bring with Me for My Appointment?

When attending your first appointment with Dr. Smirnova, please bring:

  • Referral letter from your GP
  • Copies of results, ultrasounds, and any relevant information
  • Medicare card, DVA card, Pension card
  • Private health fund information
  • Don’t worry if you don’t have copies of your results or scan reports – we can request these on your behalf.

Will I Need an Internal Examination?

An internal examination is not always necessary – it depends on the reason for your visit. If you prefer not to have an internal examination, we can discuss alternative options during your appointment.

Do I Need to Reschedule My Appointment if I am Having My Period?

Rescheduling your appointment depends on the reason for your visit and whether any procedures are needed. If your appointment is for a CST smear or colposcopy, it is best to reschedule. If you’re unsure, please call our consulting rooms at (02) 9557 2450, and we can discuss your options.
